A cyclist pedals around the pump track at Ramsay Park in Watsonville. At nearly 20,000 square feet, and filled with paved rollers, berms and jumps opened in 2021 as the largest in Santa Cruz County. The project was fully funded by Santa Cruz Mountains Trails Stewardship through donations by private donors and was constructed in cooperation with the city of Watsonville. The track is virtually maintenance-free, with underground storm drainage and surrounding landscaping which features native and drought-tolerant plants. Santa Cruz Mountains Trails Stewardship is local nonprofit that builds and maintains trails for the public and connects communities to nature through responsible outdoor recreation. A pump track is so named because is a circuit of rollers and turns designed to be ridden completely by riders generating momentum by up and down body movements called “pumping” — instead of traditional pedaling or pushing.
